E11: CHAPTER 2

The next morning was tense and uncomfortable for Ella, to the extent that even Matthew brought her a cup of coffee and encouraged her to feel better. Overnight, she had come to the conclusion that she badly wanted Josie to be wrong about this meeting in the park. It didn't really matter whether the sundial was a friendly hint or not. If this group of watchers had access to human bone, she didn't want a damned thing to do with them.

Josie, however, seemed immune to this trepidation. She was going about her day with an unusual spring in her step, and actually seemed eager for 10:30 a.m. to come. Perhaps that was part of what made Ella so uncomfortable. Though it was evidently important to work out who this group was and what their intentions were, Ella's interest in answering those questions was purely professional. Josie, on the other hand, seemed riveted by the mystery. She actually wanted to come into contact with these people.

It was a side of Ella's boss that she had seen at Eden's headquarters. Before then, Ella had always assumed that Josie worked for the greater good. Now, Ella reluctantly had to admit that Josie seemed to obey her own curiosity more than her morals… whatever those morals actually were. The assurance that Ella's training was leading her to perform some public service was fast fading away.

She didn't want this to be her future – cavorting with criminals and playing games with gangsters. Ella wanted to help people. They didn't always have to stay on the correct side of the law. Goodness only knew that the law had its ethical problems, but that certainly didn't mean she fancied supporting pimps and drug pushers.

For now, at least, all she could do was follow Josie. As Josie checked her wristwatch, it seemed that it was time to take that literally.

“I make it ten-thirty,” said Josie. “Time to leave.”

“Please be careful,” said Matthew, neatly smoothing the folded crease on an invoice. “I know you're sure about this, Josie, but keep your eyes open for me, won't you?”

“I don't intend to go in there with them squeezed shut,” Josie said, throwing him an admonishing look. “But yes. Rest assured, I'll take good care of myself and Miss Quick.”

“Thank you.”

“We're only around the corner, by the by,” she said, feigning concern in her tone of voice. “If you panic and need to check we haven't vanished.”

Matthew ignored the teasing, instead sending them off with a light smile. “In a while, then.”

Josie had the sundial in her arms, seeming completely unfazed by having the bones so close to her face. Ella would have offered to help, but she sensed she'd be swatted for it so instead, she held the door open and scampered down the stairs to open the one onto the street, too.

“He makes a lot of fuss,” said Josie, once the latch had shut behind them. “You'd think he'd never seen me get out of a sticky situation before.
